Arctic Train

Overview

The Arctic Train will give you one of the world’s most beautiful train journeys. The Swedish author, Ernst Didring, described the Ofoten train track as the “eighth wonder of the world”. After a journey on the Arctic Train, you´ll understand why. The spectacular train journey on the Ofoten train tracks travels over seven bridges, through 23 tunnels and past five stations. After an hour long journey you pass the Swedish border, more than 500 meters above sea level, and arrive at Riksgränsen station.

The 42 km long Ofoten train tracks start in Narvik and go all the way to the Swedish border. It´s Norway´s northernmost train track. The train travels through a unique and beautiful terrain. Part of the tracks are literaly carved out of the mountain, meter by meter. The journey from the fjord to the high mountains takes you through an unpopulated, wild and dramatic landscape that will take your breath away. There will be several stops at vantage points along the way.

The Train can be chartered for groups, and you can order food and drinks along the way. The trip is well suited for different unique experiences. The Arctic Train is the world´s only northern light train and is suitable for telling the history about the Battle of Narvik during World War II. The focus is not on efficient traveling, but on giving you a unique arctic experience.

It is possible to tailor a programme for groups anywhere between 10-250 persons. Examples are:
- Train journey Narvik-Bjørnefjell roundtrip and dining at the train station café.
- History telling about Rombaksbotn at Narvik station.
- Train journey with your own historical guide on board.
- A hike in Rombaksbotn, travelling back with boat.
- A singer on the train.

The Ofoten tracks are laid down through a historically important landscape. During the journey your guide can tell the history of “rallarveien” (the story of the train construction workers) and the building of the tracks, and about the Battle of Narvik during World War II.
