Mountain hike to
Nord-Saulo

Overview

Nord-Saulo is Norway's highest border mountain and stands tall in the terrain when viewed from Jakobsbakken Mountain Resort. The mountain is located on the border between Saltdal Municipality in Norway and Arjeplog Municipality in Sweden.

The hike is best suited for late summer, but you can also use randonee skis to reach the top during winter. The trek begins from Tjorvihytten or from the path to Dorro, which is on the way towards Tjorvi. During the summer, you can drive all the way to Tjorvihytten, while in winter, you can ski along the beautiful ski trails to reach the cabin.

From Tjorvihytten (Tjorvi cabin), you start by following the trail in the direction of Mavas. After about 2.5 kilometers, you veer off the trail and head towards Saulotjønna lake. The Saulotjønnene lakes are clearly marked on the map. Walk on the east side of Saulotjønna for a while, then follow a distinct ridge up between the 'humps'. Since Nord-Saulo consists of two peaks, you have the opportunity to climb both peaks once you're up there.

At the top, a view unfolds that is scarcely matched in the Salten area. From here, you can gaze northwards towards the Sulitjelma Massif, including landmarks such as Blåmannsisen glacier, Vardetoppen, Stortoppen, and Suliskongen. You can also see far into Sweden and towards the peaks around Beiarn and Svartisen glacier.
